Upgrades for PvE gear are account-wide, however upgrades for PvP gear require a specific currency, such as [Valorstones] or [Harbinger Crestsor [Harbinger Crests]. The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade additional gear in an armor slot decreases after the first upgrade.
Weapons
Weapons are a crucial element of any successful character, whether used to ward off a murderous creature, kill an intruder, win a target shooting competition or simply hang on the wall. Regardless of how you plan to use a specific weapon, it's important to keep in mind that it's possible to upgrade it and will evolve with your playstyle over time.
Upgrades to weapons can be made by visiting a Blacksmith that has a Weapon Workbench. Therefore, players should only upgrade their weapons when they've acquired the maximum possible number of upgrades through regular and Whetblade items.

Trinkets
Trinkets are a special item that offer a variety of Boosts. They can be upgraded like other equipment, by interacting directly with the Item Upgrader.

Other items are available as drop from dungeons or battlegrounds.

The process of upgrading, or upping as it is commonly referred to is to transform a normal, rare, set, or unique item into an elite variant of the base item. This is accomplished by purchasing a component upgrade from the upgrade menu and then incorporating it into a base item that has been upgraded.
This will unlock all the stats that had been locked behind the base item's requirements, or the maxed-out version. The increased stats makes the upgraded version an item more valuable than its base counterpart. The maximum defense rolls and upgrade requirements for the upgraded version can be found in the table below.
There are exceptions to the rule. If an item is limited in its use due to the requirements (whistan's shield, for instance is only available to Facebook sorcs) or has a low base stat however, it is possible to increase its stats to a higher level, it will get little use and will only gain value.
